Why is it listed in months and not years?
Because listing in months is more accurate than listing in years.
For example if you did HLTAID011 Provide First Aid on January 1st 2024, you would need to renew it by/on January 1st 2027.
But if you went by counted strictly by years than by doing it anytime in 2027 you would actually have a certificate that could be out of date.
Why are there renewal timeframes?
There are two key reasons. The first is practice = confidence. When an emergency hits every second counts and you need to be confident. That’s why you need to keep your first aid valid for NSW and QLD. People often refresh their CPR skills each year. The second is that times change: Just as our computers aren’t running Windows XP anymore because times have changed, so with our first aid course new improved knowledge comes out that increases the quality of first aid care
Who sets the Renewal Timeframes?
The renewal periods for First Aid and CPR training are guided by several key organisations.
The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) sets the national clinical recommendations, including CPR every 12 months and First Aid every 3 years. These guidelines are adopted by state regulators such as SafeWork NSW and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, who require workplaces to ensure staff maintain current certification.
For Low Voltage Rescue and CPR (LVR/CPR), the Electrical Safety Office Queensland and equivalent industry regulators mandate annual refreshers for electrical workers. The official unit standards themselves are maintained on training.gov.au, Australiaβs national register of training qualifications.
In addition, many employers β particularly in high-risk industries like construction, childcare, and electrical work β may enforce stricter internal renewal cycles to meet their own workplace health and safety policies.
