What is Safe Work Month?
In Queensland and New South Wales, October each year is Work Safe Month. This year’s theme is This yearβs theme,Β safety: every job, every day! Regardless of your occupation, location, industry or size, we all need to prioritise safety at work everyday.
Each week has a theme and a specific focus:

No matter your role, you can make a difference:
- Employers, Sole Traders & Contractors: Engage your team to plan safety activities. Use this month to review your risk management strategies for both physical and psychosocial hazards.
- Workers: Speak with your manager, WHS officer, or Health and Safety Representative (HSR) to share ideas and encourage participation in National Safe Work Month.
- Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs): Connect with workers and management to plan initiatives, promote safety, and raise awareness throughout your workplace.
- Industry Organisations & Unions: Share official resources and provide tailored, industry-specific safety advice to support your members.
What can each of us do:
For Employers, Business Owners, Sole Traders, and Contractors
Take the lead on workplace safety this October. Use National Safe Work Month as a catalyst to:
- Engage your staff: Start a conversation about the campaign and brainstorm safety initiatives and activities together.
- Review your WHS plan: Audit how you manage risks from both physical hazards (like slips and trips) and psychosocial hazards (like stress and burnout).
- Plan and promote: Schedule safety events, training sessions, or discussions throughout the month to keep safety top of mind.
For Workers
Your voice is crucial for creating a positive safety culture. You can contribute by:
- Starting a conversation: Talk to your manager, WHS officer, or Health and Safety Representative (HSR).
- Sharing ideas: Suggest how your workplace can participate in National Safe Work Month, whether through a safety morning tea, a hazard inspection, or a mental health workshop.
For Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs)
As an HSR, you are a key link between workers and management. During National Safe Work Month, you can:
- Facilitate collaboration: Work with your employer and colleagues to plan meaningful activities.
- Raise awareness: Help promote the month’s safety theme and share important information and resources.
- Champion participation: Encourage everyone in your workplace to get involved in safety initiatives.

For Industry Organisations and Unions
Support your members in their commitment to workplace safety.
- Share resources: Distribute official National Safe Work Month materials to your network.
- Provide expert advice: Offer tailored safety guidance and best practices specific to your industry’s unique challenges.
